Sexual assault: women’s voices on the health impacts of not being believed by police

Abstract Background Sexual assault is a prevalent crime against women globally with known negative effects on health. Recent media reports in Canada indicate that many sexual are not believed by police. Negative reporting experiences of have been associated secondary victimization and trauma among survivors. However, little about the impact being sexually assaulted police has survivor’s health well-being. The purpose this study was to explore women’s after their perceived Methods We conducted open-ended semi-structured interviews 23 survivors who were explored self-reported impacts from April July, 2019. All audio-recorded, transcribed, entered into NVIVO for analysis. Data analyzed using Colaizzi’s analytic method. Results Analysis revealed three salient themes regarding social assault: (1) Broken Expectations which resulted loss trust victimization, (2) Loss Self, (3) Cumulative Health Social Effects. findings showed additional mental burdens beyond assault. Many felt further victimized at time when they needed support, leading use taking alcohol and/or drugs as coping strategy. Conclusion Reporting outcomes Improving disclosure experience mitigate promote healing. This important police, health, service providers receive disclosures may be able positively influence overall effects.
